Orderliness brings comfort. When the sunlight filtered into a clean, beautiful, and organized living room, I feel like a child with a good mother. Someone cares about my well-being and has provided for my needs, except that now, as an adult, I have become my own good mother.

Perhaps the chief reason that order is so important is that it chases away fear-the fear of being out of control. When I can’t manage even the basic daily affairs of my life, my needs are not met and I worry-worry that my finances are in trouble and I may not know it, worry that someone will drop in and I will need a receipt or important paper and it will be gone.

The good news? We can whisk away those worries when we simply care for ourselves the way a mother would. If you
