One of the simplest ways to avoid the pain of an unpleasant house is to leave it and busy oneself elsewhere. Shopping meets the need well. The beauty loving housewife is able to surround herslef with beautiful new things in the department store or interesting things at the antique store or garage sale. There always is a hope that somewhere out there may be just one thing to really perk up the house. So we drag home our treasures and clutter more surfaces or fill more closets and drawers. In addition, this pastime can become very expensive.
We can go out to the park or visit friends to get away. Or we can go to work, either on volunteer projects or for profit. Both of these solutions, while personally or economically satisfying, keep the housewife out of the house and away from solving the problems there.
